When it comes to social situations, I don't think that popularity should matter most-- I don't have all the time in the world to be worrying about or trying to make many different friends, yet I'm not saying that I'm an outcast or rebel.
Now in the work world, I think it's important that you know people with whom you're working with (for example, your co-workers and your manager/boss). It's also good to have good communication skills with your customers/consumers.
Popularity could help you get known out there in the real world.
However, I don't rely so much on wanting to make a bunch of friends because popularity can sometimes be only a vanity issue (meaning the more people you know, the more "greater" of a person you will be). Some people that are popular can tend to be stuck up and rude, whereas others aren't like that.
Basically, I think it depends on the person's own values in terms of what "popular" means to them.

I believe being "popular" or "cool" sometimes is not what everyone thinks it is. If being popular means having more friends, then you don't really need to be popular to have lots of friends, just be yourself, have an open mind, have fun and most of all be there for your friends, and that ...is the true definition of being "cool" cause cool isn't what you wear or who you pal around with, it's the person that "other" people want to be around.

To some it will always be cool, to others totally uncool.
I think the real question is do you want to be popular? Are you willing to do what it takes? Or are you better off being you?
I personally believe in individuality. Popularity is a fleeting achievement based totally on pride, which is one of the so-called seven deadly sins. It takes envy, another one of the 'seven sins' to make the effort to get there. Respect yourself, be humble, enjoy life. At some point in life you won't be popular and you'll realize it really doesn't matter.

No, I don't feel being popular is cool because soon as you mess up people will be the first ones to point you and it out.

being popular is not all that great.sure you have cool friends and you get cute boys to talk to you but when your popular people will soon start to dislike you and your attitude. you will become an enemy to the public and the talk of the town. being cool is not an oppurtunity it is a privelege. you work to get in you work to stay in.its hard work being popular. and being cool is just the beginning.

I think that people put way too much importance on being "popular" or "cool". It's not healthy to put that much of your self worth in the control of other people's opinions. Yes it's good to be a nice person, and to be well liked, but you'll always meet people who don't like you for one reason or another. Be a good person and you'll be well known for the right reasons.

It depends on what type of people you are popular with. Are they thugs? Then that's not cool. Are they popular because they have money? So not cool. Are they popular because they have attitude? PLEASE, get your own attitude. The point is, if you let other people's opinions define you, then you really don't have a life, do you? Be yourself.

being popular is cool as long as your not being yourself. Why would you just want to be popular when it's not you. Popular may be dressing in pink while you like wearing blue or another color. Don't become someone else to fit in. Be yourself. If pink is you, than fine. If black is you, dress in black. Don't be that person. Be you.

If you are popular for doing the right thing, and being true to yourself, then it is cool. Otherwise, it is a waste of time and effort.

I consider myself the most popular kid in my grade in school because I talk to everyone in the grade, from preps to nerds. But I don't consider myself the coolest kid.
To answer your question being you is cool, and being popular is a very common and obsolete adjective. NO
