The minute chlorine dissolves in water it starts to dissipate, or gas-off. Since it goes away 24/7 you need to add more 24/7. That's why there are tablets (slow dissolving) and floating chlorinators. They add chlorine all the time- slowly. Trick is to get them adding at the same rate chlorine is leaving. You never achieve a perfect balance, but you can get close. Granular chlorine is quick dissolving, so it is used to give a quick "hit" when the floater has fallen behind, and to shock, or super chlorinate, the water. It is extremely beneficial to maintain a chlorine residual (sort of a chlorine "bank account") of 1.5 ppm. You can only do this by use of a test kit.

Basically, as often as you need it. If you go to a supplier of pool checmicals, you should be able to pick up a test kit that you can use to measure the chemicals in your pool. Based on those results, you'll know what you need to add to the pool. They'll also carry stuff for "automatically" adding chemicals to the pool (like a little floating thing for holding chlorine tabs that disolve in the water over time). As long as you keep on top of it, you won't have to do any massive chemical "shocking" of the water which tends to make your pool unusable for a while.

for a 6500 gallons of water I use two gallons of bleach/chlorine per week.
the bromine tabs DO NOT WORK. It is not enough chemical for that size pool. Every three days I see algea build up and algaecide 5 oz every week on top of that I have a sand filter so everyone is different.

Use liquid maybe 1/2 gal a week and stir up water. Use cation very bad in eyes and on clothes. DO NOT STAND ABOVE IT WHEN POURING. If pool is on grass area use a cup to add every couple of days. If there is to much. Kids will let you know. My eyes sting. Pool supply store sells test strips esay and safe to use. Dip in water and match to color chart

lmao!! hulo's answer was funny!
but really, it depends on what kind you get...if you get chlorine tablets..then when they finish dissolving..then put another in and so on (thats how i do it) but it all depends also, on how frequently you use the pool (and when people pee or other stuff...)
