For many years I was happy and gratified to help all who came along in need. With food, shelter, money, what ever! It was the JOY of giving.
Now I need a serious operation, I have gone to the folks that I helped on their way...Not so much as a word of kindness.
I hear all the reasons they are sorry, but can't. Would if they could. Boy that is tough, wish I could help!
With out help, I will not be able to walk for two weeks at least and will not have an income for 12 weeks to pay my mortgage or buy food or medicine with.
Now I wish I had saved every penny I shared in folly!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it depends. I really don't trust the "beggars" anymore. I'd rather donate money, clothes, and other items to charity rather than handing it over to someone like that. Yes, I do feel bad for those that are down on their luck, and going through a rough time. And I wouldn't wish that on anybody. But there are too many people taking advantage of generous people with good hearts. Too many that have their hand out saying that they need it for food when what they really need it for alcohol. And there are people who do it because it's quick cash that isn't reported to the state so it doesn't take away from their welfare checks.

well after working the streets of Atlanta as a street minister I have a very knowledgable and perhaps opinionated idea.
Most homeless who are out begging are there because they chose to be.
The homeless who are homeless for lack of work and are trying to do better, will be in a shelter, they will get with and into a job program and will normally be back in a home within about 3 or 4 months.
The normal begger, will be a drug addict who seldom eats and spends all of thier money on prostitutes, drugs and will normally have a long arrest record.
I know one specific person who used to hang out on one corner, he would make at least 300 dollars tax free every day, when he was not on his corner he wondered into college dorm buildings and pick up stuff laying around ( computers, cameras, and bikes)
Now even on bad days he won't let you take him to a shelter, because they require him to shower and not use drugs to stay there. so he would rather sleep in a parking garage somewhere.
So I carry cards with variouis shelters, work programs, drug programs and the such on me, if they are hungry, I give them a card and tell them to call this number and someone will come get them, I would not give them money directly , since I am giving money to be used in sinful ways 99 percent of the time.
If they are really hungery, I would talk them to a local stand and pay 4 or 5 dollars to feed them, than to give them 25 cents,
I have lived there, worked there, and giving them money is only supporting thier destroying thier life.

Years ago, I was in a yogurt shop, when a man came in. He crouched down in front of where I sat, and told me something about a problem with his truck which contained his work tools-I think it was outta gas or something. He asked for two dollars, and I gave it to him. About twenty minutes later, I realized he crouched down so as to avoid being filmed by the security camera in the yogurt shop. It was then that I realized I got clipped for the two bucks. Since then, it's been "no" to anyone who asks. I contribute to a non-profit recovery program.

you know.... to the teens and young healthy ppl i dont give $ because i want to help them get better, not help them stay down at rock bottom.
i figger if they can say
"can you spare some chage?"
they can ALSO say
"you want fries with that?"
so to them i say sorry i cant help you.
to the old ones, those who are CLEARLY mentally unstable, or the blind, or disabled etc etc i DO give money. and to those who play guitars or accordians in front of the liquor store. i figure they ARE earning thier money so to speak.
it is best i think to err on the side of generosity. it cant hurt.
plus, i was broke at one point in my life and was too proud to ask for help. some ppl saw i needed help and gave it anyway. i didnt HAVE to ask. id like to be that kind of person too :)
