No. If anyone says that text messages, phone calls, (any electroic devices) are privite they are LIEING to you. Nothing is private. People can access anything in less than two mintues, and when I say anything--I mean anything. In plus if your friend is having an affair; he should get caught (no offense)

yes, the phone company keeps them. However, he would have to do some heavy duty criminal activity for the authorities to subpoena them. For a simple martial or relationship thing, the only way to see the messages is somehow commandeer the phone or account that the text messages are created and sent on.

Actually believe it or not a lot of people truly believe that text messages are completely and totally safe, but they aren't. There are a lot of ways to intercept text messages and send text messages to people routing it from another number making you think a specific person sent it. They aren't private and if someone really wanted to intercept them they could. A friend of mine actually does that to her boyfriend.

It's not as easy to intercept Internet data streams over land lines as it is wireless connections. Using using a encryption technology (like connecting to your bank account online) helps, but it can still be compromised. It all depends on how bad a person wants your information and at what they're willing to risk.
However, there are such thing as keyloggers. These are pieces of software or a hardware device that can be set up to log everything you type on your keyboard for retrieval later on. However something like this needs to be either physically connected to your PC or deliberately installed (if it's software).
Nothing is 100% secure when it comes to electroic transmissions.

If you don't really need to access the contents of the message you can always try to find his cell phone bill. It keeps a list of text messages for the billing period.

yes but it would be luck for someone to intercept a message. What you need to do is get a keylogger program on his phone. Then you can see everything he types in.

The government can intercept messages, but they only look for key words, like bomb, or terrorist. Heck, this message may even be intercepted. So, yes, the government can but it's not like they are sitting at their workstations giggling at your friends conversation.
