I live in South Texas, and although I have access to all the red-eared sliders I could ever want, I want land turtles only.
Then, as they grow, I can make a pen for my back yard for them. But I want to start out with babies. I am an adult, and I have several pets that are well cared for.

1. You'll probably want to focus on the box turtles that tolerate the local habitat, such as the Ornate Box turtles (Terrepena ornata) or the Gulf Coast Box turtle (T. carolina major).

2. It is hard to find a good, reliable source for babies since they are illegal to sell in many locations. In most of the US, any turtle under 6" (or 4" in some places) can only be sold for 'legitimate display, scientific, or educational purposes'. Sorry to say, but many of the babies sold are sold under shady circumstances, which often equals shady cares and other practices.

3. Your local herpetological society is often a great source of info on good local dealers or breeders. There may even be a source in the club. The club will also usually know about upcoming reptile expos, which are another good option.

well then you don't want a turtle...you want a tortoise. all turtles must have access to water *for swimming or wading*, tortoises usually only need water for hydration...but usually get all their water from the leafy food they eat...perhaps you should research the difference on line, so you will know how to provide a well suited environment for them.

It is my understanding here in Pennsylvania it is illegal to sell or own small 'pet' turtles / tortoises because of health hazards from the different diseases they my have or carry.
