I am trying to put together a short collection of songs to put to my fireworks display this weekend. I have window XP home and I would like to cut my songs in half so I can play more short songs.

any simple audio editor will do the trick. I recommend Cool Edit. It's not sold anymore, but I still use it for everything. I'm an audio engineer, but the software is so easy to use (and powerful) that anyone can use it even for simple tasks.
Just load up whatever mp3 u want to shorten, select the part you want to get rid of by clicking and dragging, and hit delete on your keyboard. Save the file and exit. done!

I have a free program that I use for websites. It is called Audiacity. I think you can download it the site below. It works great. I have a older version with makes you change mp3's to wav files but it works great

Go download GoldWave, a free music editing program.

Why u want shorter songs? Is it because the song files are very big so u cannot put many songs? Why not go and find the same song which is smaller in size?
