Rifling is an improvement used in guns and cannons, with origins in both Europe and America in the mid-1800's. The guns brought by early explorers and settles were not rifles. They were smooth bore guns. If you recall, the confederates in the Civil War were at a great disadvantage because their muskets were smooth bore, and many of the yanks had rifles, which were more accurate and had a longer range.
