Does anyone have any books they could recommend on how to turn a racing flag into a bandana? Any scientific work on this field of research?

The simplest solution is to use a checkered bandana (bandanna, both spellings are valid). They sell those at a number of places. Using a flag itself would probably not be best as flags are usually of a thick material, probably too thick for what you might have in mind.

I wouldn't recommend it. Bandana's are so out.

Yeah just tie it like you normally would.

My question is why would you want to deface such memorablia with your sweat?

Only if you spell it BANDANNA (which is the correct spelling).
