Should men's socks match the shirt or the pants?

if you have on black pants then your socks should be black. Tan pants or jeans the color of your shirt or white.

For the "metrosexual" men who care way too much about clothes, the socks have to harmonize with something. Some dudes make sure the socks go with the shoes: black shoes mean black or gray socks, brown or tan shoes will go with brown, tan, or even dark green socks. White socks are generally considered to be an "athletic" look, out of place in the corporate or professional world except on a casual day with maybe light colored boat shoes or similar.

Real men don't care, and tend to wear really stinky crusty rumpled tube socks that nobody pays attention to while they sit on the discarded back seat from a 1974 Chevy Nova on the redwood deck attached to a shotgun singlewide while slurping down a warm can of Schlitz.

I don't care for the look if the color of the socks are a contrast to the pants. Match the pants with the socks.

Shoes is what matters. If I have a pair of tennis shoes on I wear white socks. If I have a pair of casual shoes on, I match the socks with the pants I'm wearing.

Nah, sounds too much like when my lil sis would dress, her socks had to match her belt with had to match her hairbows, and she actually thought that certain colors did NOT go with blue jeans! LOL. Prints/argyle are ok with lighter pants, dark solids/dark prints with darker pants, (don't wear black and navy blue together) anything with jeans really. Just make sure if you wear sandals, leave the socks in the drawer! Esp the black ones!
