Define "out in public" and qualify what kind of stranger and what sort of talk?

For example, if I'm sitting at the bar and a nice woman next to me tries to strike up a chat, I not only like it, I encourage it.

On the other hand, if I'm walking down the sidewalk and some crazy dude comes up and starts asking me, "what's the frequency, Kenneth" ...well...that didn't turn out too well for Dan Rather, did it?

It's a shame that in this modern world, we tend to stay in self-protective mode (and often rightly so). There is much that may be said about the schizophrenia that living in modern society has become, but that's a large subject far beyond the range of this post.

I'll leave you with this notion from the reknowned psychiatrist R.D. Laing, who proposed that schizophrenia is a response to living in modern society.

If there is a purpose, I don't mind. Except for the stuff that gets old. People with babies know that they're cute, they hear it a billion times a day, unless they themselves are intimidating and for some reason, people have to point out red hair. But anything with a point is just fine as long as it doesn't cross any other social boundaries (don't chat up a storm when someone is busy or flirt with someone a few feet from their spouse)

It depends. Most of the time I run into very nice people but recently there has been this creepy man in a lot of the stores I go to. He always follows me and then comes up to me and tells me how much he likes my hair. I have very long hair and he just talks and talks about it then tells me how he wants to grow his hair out too. It's getting to the point where I go to different stores in the next town over just so I don't have to deal with his creepiness!

Generally, I love it.

Everyone has so many amazing stories to tell! I think people tend to believe that their problems are the worst, or their joys the greatest, but if you listen to others, you find that we're really so much alike, and every one of us is fascinating - though some tell it better.

Of course, there ARE weirdos out there, and if I feel uncomfortable with a stranger, I'll shut hir down pretty quickly, or leave.

I was aways taught to never talk to strangers. That being said, I often approach people on the street - it's part of my job as a panhandler.

It depends on what mood I'm in and what they're saying. If they're being a real jerk to the sales clerk in a store and look to me to agree with them I Hate It!! But if they are saying something complementary or asking for directions, I usally like it.

I love it! Tells you more about that person and who knows you might even help them with a problem they might be experiencing at that time.

Depends on why they're talking to me. If they need something it's fine. If they're trying to be nosy it's not.
