Birds live for very few years, so you are not dealing with the same birds. You can gain their trust. My grandmother used to put sunflower seeds in her lips, and birds would come and take them. This happened over 40 yrs, so she was working with lots of different birds.
The main thing is patience. You need to sit by the feeding area,, and not move, and not look directly at the birds. Then have seeds, or other desireable food, on your person, or lap. It takes time, but get the birds used to you being near their feeding area.

Sooner, or later, they will feel comfortable feeding around you, and on you. Real patience will net you the next generation, and the next, and then it is a no-brainer---the young ones are introduced to you as a non-threatening source of food. Remember, these are not pets, and will never be, but a little patience will result in a fantasic reward, and the companionship of birds for years to come.

Just because you have been around for 20 years doesn't mean the birds have. It is their nature to be wary of any threats. The birds reproduce and return to their nesting areas which means there are generations of birds. Hence instint keeps them wary of you.

It's a God thing.

Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
