Self-assembled platinum complexes are of great interest for use in molecular recognition. Our approach is to use the hydrogen bond formed between a phenol and a platinum-phenoxide to self-assemble box-shaped platinum aggregates. The desired hydrogen bonding interaction has been observed in square planar diphosphine platinum(II) diphenoxy complexes by low temperature 1H NMR. Manipulating the effective basicity of the phosphine and phenoxy oxygen can turn the hydrogen bonding on and off. This chemical "switch" provides control of hydrogen bonding strengths and ultimately the structure of the self-assembled macromolecular complexes.
