A girl today does have to be careful, and it sounds like you are doing very cautious things, which is good. But you maybe too careful in some respects, and you also might be overlooking some other ways to be even safer.
If you are serious about making sure you are safe in your home contact your local police department (via a non-911 phone number) and ask to talk to a public safely officer who could help you make sure your home is safe. They might direct you to some local community center or some class where you can learn personal and home security techniques.
Specifically you should get a peep-hole installed in your door; it's easier than opening a window. And the dogs are great, as long as they are house-broken. Most importantly make absolutely sure you are practicing the best gun safety you can. Lock them up, and make sure no one can accidentally get to them. I'm going to assume you are a registered and legal owner of those guns.

Well I did not even let a Sheriff's Deputy in my apartment one time and he was in uniform and had the car and all that good stuff and I still wouldn't let him in (he was looking for my neighbor, but wanted to come in and use my phone). Anyway, I don't think you can be too paranoid now a days because people are nutty. I have a small daughter and we are home a lot too w/o my hubby and I do not let anyone in my house and I do not open the door unless it is someone in my family or my friends !!
So I guess my answer is no, I don't think you're too paranoid !!

No you don't need to talk to a counselor and no you are not paranoid. You are smart for not opening your door when a male knocks. Smarter would be not opening the door for any male or female you don't know. I find it alarming how many women answer the door and think nothing of it. They are a statistic waiting to happen.
I know some woman right now is thinking, Oh, but my big strong husband/boyfriend will protect me.
Wrong. He is not so useful when a sawed off shotgun is pointed to his temple.

Well, it may sound paranoid to some people, but I believe you are doing the best thing, as a woman. As long as you don't point your guns at people or sic dogs on them, unless you're threatened, anyway. Nope, I believe people should be more careful. If I were a woman, I'd keep a gun handy in the house, and a cell phone in a 'safe room' in case of a house break-in.

Nope, not too paranoid at all. I live in a big city/low crime area. If I don't know someone's coming I don't answer the door at all.
My friends all know to holler out when they knock so I'll open the door.
Besides, I hate unannounced visitors

You can never be too careful. I live in a high crime area and I have a pitbull and when I open the door I hold her collar while she barks and growls and tries to jump at the man at the door. When I go to the basement I take her with me to do the laundry. Be careful with the guns.

Speaking through the screen isn't going to give you any protection. Yell through the door. Be safe, but don't be so distrusting of people. What happened to you that you won't open the door to men, and are still afraid even when you have dogs and guns?

Nowadays it may be considered normal to be cautious - I believe the word is called nerotic if it is excessive - being cautious is not a bad thing- i would recommend being that way especially at night. People who are anonymous sometimes can do things they would not ordinally do in their familiar home area Having integrety and doing the right thing even when no one else is watching seems to be a lost trait with some. That trait will serve you well in life. gl

No, you are doing the right thing. The people who fling open the door all the time without a second thought are the idiots! You are smart, I suggest you stay that way and don't dum yourself down for your idiot.

Learn to defend yourself.
1. Learn to rip a man's family jewels off.
2. Spend an hour a day perfecting your technique to puncture a man's eye with a key.
3. Also, you can learn to pop his eyeball out of his head with your bare hands (I'm serious, it CAN be done).
4. Learn a martial art and get really good at it.
5. Affirm the phrase "God help any man who f**ks with me" over and over again until you really believe it.
Then, men will be afraid of you.
