This happened to our Nano. According to the Apple.com support website, there are 5 things you can try to see if you can correct the problem.
These five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
* 1. Reset your iPod.
* 2. Retry with a different USB port.
* 3. Restart your computer.
* 4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
* 5. Restore your iPod.
If those don't work, your iPod might be dead. In that case, if it's been less than a year since you bought it, you can get warranty service. If it's been over a year, you're out of luck unless you bought an extended warranty.

if it comes on when its plugged into the base, its not the battery
try reformatting it and reinstalling the OS

Use your warranty. Usually they just send you a brand new one if it's busted.
