He started out Kal-Al on Planet Krypton. The it was blown up and his father sent him into space on an egg shaped ship. He landed in Smallville, Kansas where he was found by the Kents. He was about 4-5 in human years. They adopted him and named him Clark. After college he moved to Metropolis (still Kansas) and began working with Lois Lane and the Daily Planet (a newspaper). It was after all this that he developed his alterego Superman. He always had the powers but never showed them off.

Superman was not born on Krypton. The genetic materials for the infant Kal El (with an 'E' and no hyphen) were placed in a special capsule where he would gestate (this was normal for Krypton), that was later launched before Krypton exploded. It landed near Smallville on Earth, where he was 'born', thus despite being genetically Kryptonian he was American by birth. He later moved to Metropolis as described above.
