My friend seems to think that "Smells like teen spirit" is originally by a band called Grunge and not Nirvana. I realize that grunge is the seattle-based "teen-angst" style from the 80's. But does anyone know if there is an actual band named grunge?

Grunge is a genre of music typically associated with the bands that came out of the Seattle area in the early 90's such as Pearl jam and of course, Nirvana. and you are correct, Smells like teen spirit is by Nirvana.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was definitely recorded by Nirvana, and grunge is a definitely a descriptive term. Not that there mightn't be a band somewhere named "Grunge" but if they're out there they've yet to release a recording that's put them in the general public view...and just to clarify, the term grunge is akin to grungy (circa 1960) which can be used to describe more than "Seattle-based teen angst". But generally speaking you are correct in the context to which you refer.
