My cat was in the basement making rustling noises, so I went to check it out. When I went down there, she was acting weird, like she was hunting for something. Also, I found shredded insulation on the floor and small animal feces (maybe from a mouse or squirrel) all over the place - in and on boxes, and on windowsills. There is a little panel on the chimney that was open, so I think it may have entered the house from there. Whatever it is, I think it is probably still alive. I'm tempted to look through boxes down there to see what I find (and to clean up the feces), but I don't want to come in contact with anything that may be dangerous to me. What should I do?

buy some roach proof and make doughballs out of it and place around and dont tlet the cat down there ,,, if its a rat try some D-Con baits in the feeder trays ,,as that doesnt impact the cat and wont be available for it to eat and die ,,or place several rat traps with gloves on ,,,use them with a banana or some strong bait like peanutbutter bread on the traps ,,and then go away ,,,then if your lucky place them in a trash bag ,,,and go on,, if your cleaning spray the areas with ammonia ,,,and then let them know your coming with a shake of each opened box ,,they will run then let the cat kill them if it can ,,,good luck

Call an exterminator. What ever it is in your basement is reproducing which means the offspring will return to nest and reproduce again. You need to have this professional taken care of to prevent further problems that bait and traps won't help. Your cat needs to be kept out of the basement to avoid contact with diseases.

Sounds like a small animal of sorts, I would set and bait some mouse traps and see what happens.

Let your cat do it's job and hunt it down.
