Because fundamentalist (i.e. insane) Muslim clerics put a price on Salmon Rushdie's head for denigrating Islam. I don't think they ever got him though.

The issues it spoke so freely about are very controversial in Muslim society, and after its release, a price was placed on his head by some conservative Muslims. They never did get him, even though it's been over 30 years.

Because of the title...It immediately got the attention of religious activists trying to sensor anything but biblical references...It grabbed public attention for much the same reason...It's all in the title...

It made the news because extremists put a death treat on him (fatwa) and he had to hide in fear for his life. I have not read the book, but a lit. professor I know who read it told me it was mediocre.
