Last year I bought a used 1995 Ford RV with the 460 engine. I have driven it about 12,000 miles with no problems. Low octane gas makes it knock pretty bad. I buy 87 octane or higher. I assume your engines failed because of the pre-detonation. I can't think of anything to suggest besides what the others have suggested concerning the timing.
