They really should not have been called DVD's Digital Video Disks, because everyone incorrectly thinks it will only store Video. Just as a CD is not only for music.
As others have said the DVD holds 4.7GB and a CD holds 650MB - 700MB.
(MB = Millions of Bytes. GB = Billions of Bytes)
When it comes to your computer ANY data can be stored on eather disk. That data can be Movies, Music, Photos, E-mails, Letters you have typed, Programs you have downloaded, or as I said ANY data.
So in this case a DVD just holds more, MUCH more, data than a CD.

Yes they are, but so are VHS movies and people copy them all the time. I think the copyright law says that you can't copy and sell the movies or charge people to see them. If viewed in the privacy of your home for personal use I believe that is ok...
Besides movies...A single layer DVD hold about the same amount of data as 7 cd's!!! That's a lot of data and worth the few bucks difference between a cd burner and a DVD burner...Good luck in your decison :o)

Hi, I think that you could get the PC with a DVD burner and copy DVDs legally. Since, if you copy a DVD you bought so that in case it gets scratched or cracked you will have a copy then its permitted. Additionally, as long as the two DVDs are not being watched at the same time, ex: one in the car one in the home, then its OK.

You can copy movies for back up purposes..
but not only that DVDs are quickly taking over CD-R format..
they hold a lot more data... I have just downloaded the windows vista beta.. and it was a DVD iso file meaning if I did not have a DVD burner I could not use it .. also if you have a digital camera you can burn your movies to DVDs.

The reason I have DVD burners is versatility. They can be used to convert VHS tapes to DVD. You can burn CDs, play CDs, and copy CDs. You can copy movies that have had the encryption removed from them. You can use them to copy your movies from your camcorder to a DVD.

They are in fact copyrights, however, you can copy for your own private use, not to copy for selling or anything like that. VCR tapes were used to copy VCR movies for private use only.
