The stern is the aft (rear) section of a boat.

The wheel (or any other steering aparatus such as a tiller) is referred to as the helm. The wheel itself may sometimes be referred to as "The Wheel" but NEVER as a steering wheel.

"HELM" is correct ! "Wheel" is OK, call it a "steering wheel" and me and the crew arrrrgggghhh gonna keel haul ya, ya swaaab !

Example: Honey, could you take the "HELM", my joint went out.
