Yes, but extremely rare. I'm an operating room nurse, 7 years never seen it happen, and only known of 1 case of malignant hyperthermia, a condition brought on by certain drugs used in anesthesia, at my hospital. I'm at a level 1 trauma center, 16 ORs (and a cysto room), and we do 30-50 cases a day.

The anesthesiologists tell the patients they took a bigger risk when they got in their cars to drive to the hospital than they face from the anesthesia.

I am not a doctor, but yes there can occasionally be complications and bad reactions to anesthesia which could lead to death. Talk to a doctor/anesthesiologist about the risks. Most physicians require pre-op tests to see if a person is healthy or has any underlying issues that could be affected by anesthesia.

It is possible, but anesthesiologists are very well trained in the drugs used in it so it is not common to die from it, dangerous, well your breathing center is suppressed to the point that you have to be put on a ventilator, so yes, but that is managed and monitored carefully, after affects: the most common is nausea, many people get this

After effects are typcally nausea and dry-mouth. It is possible to die from anesthesia though very rare. Consider that the anesthetist has his/her career on the line, and that they are solely responsible for allowing you to "go under".

If you have surgery upcoming. Don't worry about the anesthesia at all. Your primary concern is getting better as fast as possible!

Good Luck!

Yes you can die from it. I just finished reading an article about it. The percentages are very low so don't worry.
Just talk to your doctor and tell him how you feel.

yes absolutely, in many surgeries the anesthetic is the most dangerous factor! in order to keep you from feeling the pain the anesthetic takes you close to death hopefully not all the way but any mistake made can be fatal

yes the reason they tell you not to eat so many hours before is you can drown in your own vomit (like Bon Scott for one ) also your heart can stop beating if the dosage is too high and an allergic reaction could also kill you ~Melissa

Damm straight you can die, it probably happens more often than the medical profession would care to admit.
