there each applied differently. the first one to sight and the second to sound. how about seeing is believing? if someone were trying to sell you a car, he would make it sound like a great deal.. if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. if you went to see the car and seen that it was true, then seeing is believing. there are somethings in life that you can draw conclusions on because you have already experienced similar circumstances, so that means, where there's smoke, there's fire. it still doesn't make it a true statement necessarily. only circumstantial evidence.

I would say the latter. You could hear that the sky is orange with brown polka dots, but you know life isn't a Crayola sketching, so just because it was said, doesn't mean you should buy it. If it came from the grapevine, don't eat it! That actually used to be my saying, not believing in everything I hear...I've depended too much on word of mouth and not enough on freedom of thought. Hell, if you hear it, find it out yourself!

Depends on what the origins of the sayings are. They might both be true.Where there's smoke there's fire might be person specific, someone might of had a dream a long time ago and made the saying because of it.If you know who came up with the saying a lot of us might be interested to hear it.

Take it a step further, only believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.
Police departments around the US are starting to subscribe to the smoke and fire theory. That's a good thing.
