We're talking about a lifetime ago, but here's how it went with me.
My first joint was at 15. By the time I was 18, I had used meth, mescaline, peyote, opiates, acid and cocaine, all "recreational" but I was very recreation oriented. I still managed to graduate high school with high honors (which amazes me to this day).
I took a year off as I became pregnant, then went to alcohol and barbiturates. It took me two years to kick the barbiturates and another 18 to kick the alcohol. Today, I am still a nicotine addict and take a occasional drink, but light years better than those many years ago.
Does pot lead to harder stuff? Yes, if you have an 'addictive' personality. Does it screw up your life? Yes, I wasted alot of years. If I had it to do over again, I would have never smoked that first joint.

First, I used to think I was addicted, but I walked away about 12 years ago cold turkey, and I still can't kick regular cigarettes. I was a heavy user(half an ounce or more a week).
I never did anything I regretted, but then again, I never got busted.
I did try harder things, but I always intended to anyway and I never became a regular user of any of them. Well, ok, acid for one summer.
It didn't make me slow or dumb. but then again, those are just stereotypes. I actually got energized and would write or read or play games or clean the garage. It's all about what part of the brain gets stimulated for you.
The regrets that I do have are for the massive amounts of time wasted. I was a heavy user for about 7 years and during that time my life never moved forward. Once I quit I started doing the other things in life: getting married, raising kids, finishing my education, having a career.
This may sound weird as a closing, but if I had one cause that I could devote time and money to and be sure that I would win, it would be towards the legalization of marijuana. There are so many reasons: ethically, monetarily, criminally that make it idiotic for it to be illegal.

Didn't affect me, chum. I'm still the same lovable beer drinking, cigar smoking, flame belching partybot I always was! Whoo-hoo!!! My programming has not been affected affected afeeted afarted - BELCH -sorry, hiccups. I have no regrets except I do feel a little bad about that time I tried to roll Fry up in a carpet and smoke him. Nah, pure recreational and it's indicated in my program self maintenance guide.

id say recreational. it made me feel slow AND dumb. thats why i dont do it anymore. i just think its a waste of time. some people are so good at smoking weed that they dont even seem like theyre high. but when i used to do it, i used to laugh at random stuff alot, and sometimes i got paranoid.

If you were curious to start it at a teenager, you will be more curious to start other things. I do believe it was a stepping stone to other things, I dont smoke it but have struggles with alcohol & substance abuse, which does not go away...............
