The answer that most supply is usually because. I think further thought would lead us to REASON, or more correctly... reasoning.
Genesis 3:5-7
5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

In the sixth verse we see that the nature of desire in mankind compels him to seek reason and use reasoning to justify his choices. Reasoning or logic is supplied by the why and because. It's the same principle used in the if / then statement used by programmers. There really is no why or because... just a never ending desire to satisfy reason, thus reasoning. This is clearly displayed in verse seven with the need to supply clothing to cover their nakedness. In reality our confidence has been removed and reasoning is the only way to justify our actions. The trouble is this creates a new condition that has to have it's own reasoning behind it. What we refer to as reasoning is in reality an ongoing state of confusion.
While man may have the freedom of choice... without God he will never be able to use it with any wisdom.
