You'd have to fill one up with pennies and find out for yourself, to be certain.

Officially, a penny has a mass of 2.5 grams, measuring 19.05mm in diameter and 1.55mm in thickness. It's a cylinder with volume (pi times radius squared times height) of 0.4418ml.

Since 5 gallons is about 18.95 liters, a little math shows it would be able to hold about 42,900 pennies if the coins were melted down and would weigh about 500 pounds.

If you're not allowed to melt $429 for a homework project, guess a bit less than that to accomodate the pennies not being able to fit as compactly as molten copper.

The world may never know, because the weight will bust the plastic or glass B4 it fills up.
