Am I just a victim of my destiny and Genes and DNA, being constantly driven by forces beyond my conscious control ? or could I possibly change the direction of my life.

No, you control your own destiny. Your mind thinks around 100'000 thoughts a day. These have energy all of their own and manifest as your reality...your destiny. To change your destiny, all you have to do is change your thoughts.
Start today. Start thinking thoughts about what you want to happen in your life. Imagine it happening right now. Pick one or two things which are really important to you, then visualise them happening EACH DAY for 100 days. There is power in repetition, and when you start doing this, all sorts of things begin happening to help you on your way.
This is called SYNCHRONICITY and is described as being like " a thousand unseen hands " reaching out to help you.
Think thoughts which support your aims in life. Pick one or two new thoughts which you think will help you. Then repeat them regularly to yourself. You will be giving your mind all sorts of 'self-produced data' to work on.
Even if you think a negative thought, see if you can 'catch it' and immediately think the positive opposite.
This takes a bit of self-discipline at first, but soon becomes second nature to you, especially when you start to experience positive changes.
But one thing, you have to DO THIS REGULARLY. Whipping through new thoughts once or twice doesn't have much effect. They are like chuffs of a steam engine. One or two just have a little bit of power, a few hundred each day for a hundred days produces MOMENTUM.
This is how you change your life around. You don't have to live on auto-pilot. You have a free will which has been given to you, and which science is starting to prove works. Use your imagination; examine your thoughts then change them, and remember;
OPPORTUNITIES ARISE WHEN YOU OPEN UP YOUR THOUGHTS.

Only you can change the path of your life. Start small, with habits. Break a habit and you break the cycle. Change your morning routine; do something different. Then do something else different. Get a new job, get a new haircut. Change the physical or external stimulii and other things will change. I know what you mean about the auto pilot deal. I've been agonizing over the same thing all week. I'm working on it. I hope you can too. Good luck from one zombie to another.

we are all vitims of destiny, no matter what people may say you can't change destiny, if you change the way you live your life in order to change your destiny, then that is still destiny because that is what your destiny is steering you towards,
We are all dealt a hand and we play that hand the way it is dealt some people only think we can change it. Wherever we end up that is the journey we started out on.
The only way to prove this theory is a time machine and they dont exist, so till they do that is my theory

Even within the deterministic framework of forces of your Genes and DNA, you are free to change the direction of your life. Never mind destiny or fate. It is we who make our fortunes by our free-willed actions and call it fate.

you can always change your destiny, but it is usually a step down. You could become a bum,traveling from place to place, you could give up everything in search of the meaning of life, whatever. Usually the changes we seek are not worth the consequences, comfort is our biggest enemy.

There are many ways to look at this. But if you think that you are on auto pilot you are. There is no other cosmic forces controling you; it is you! If you believe and constantly remInd yourself that you going places and accomplishing things you will!!!

We are all dealt a hand, but it is what we do with it that determines who we are...your life is in your control (though sometimes I know it does not feel that way) and it is never too late to change.
