From what I understand, most undergradute universities don't offer a Pre-Med major, and most Pre-Med students major in Biology or Chemistry, take the MCATs, and apply to medical school. In Pakistan and India, high school students can take a comprehensive test (includes botany, zoology, chemistry, etc) and if they score high enough, they can go straight to medical school. Here in the U.S., most pre-med students don't seem to actually learn anything about medicine until medical school...

You are right. In the U.S., students go the 'tradtional' route and take the 4 year program first before going into Med School. Students major in Chemistry or Biology. Then, they take the MCAT and enter into Med. School.

Perhaps the feeling is by the time students complete their BS degrees, they are more mature and able to handle the riggers of Med School.

You don't have to do "pre-med" to get into medical school. All of the ones in the USA have entrance requirements that are similar as far as courses required. You don't even have to major in the sciences, though you need lots of science and math classes and at least some foreign language. Without the foundation that those classes provide, med-students would not be able to understand what is taught in their classes at all. Look at the quality of doctors in Pakistan and India. They're terrible. I'd never allow one to treat me if they did NOT have a license to practice in the USA.

Here I thinkit depends on where you go. Two friends of mine are doing pre-med, one at University of Southern California and the other at UC Berkely. Medicine, I think the reason is because you have to truly be dedicated in grad school, so that's why they offer the serious stuff to the grad students

The US also has the best health care system in the world.

You need a well-rounded education and you need to know the sciences very well. Not only does this weed out the money-hungry people are truly incapable, but it really does give students more of an understanding of medicine.

Med Schools in the US want well rounded students to become doctors, and to make sure the students coming into medical school are committed to studying medicine. They don't want someone without all the necessary qualities, such as charecter, integrity, to become doctors. They also want to see that the students they accept are up to the challenge of going to school and balancing all aspects of their life.

Medical school is a graduate program. If you didn't go to college first, it would be eight years long instead of four.
