Does anyone know how to get triple stars on Mario Kart DS?

I play the grand prix races regularly, but I've never scored higher than a single star. I really want to improve my scores. Does getting higher points *have* to involve drifting? If it does, does anyone have any tips to make drifting easier? I usually end up squeeling off course.

General tips include getting faster times (which would include "drifting" or "snaking") and possibly not hitting any walls, pipes, etc.

There are certain combination of characters + karts that will allow greater control in it. Generally the lighter characters are best for this until you pretty much mastered the art. Sorry I can't say much more, haven't mastered it myself!
