i play a lil guitar, too. Usually i write my lyrics, then just strum around on the guitar looking for a sweet tune. Its more like a feeling, playing guitar, when ur trying to come up with lyrics. Even if the music is really wonky, as long as it matches the lyrics mood. I kn ow this may sound confusing, but its the only way to explain it.

I've heard that people do it both ways. (Chris Cornell, on his solo CD, and The Raconteurs on the song "Steady As She Goes", have stated they've written the lyrics first) , but I think for most people they write the music first (Rob Thomas, Mick Jagger).
Or sometimes, music and lyrics both flow out at the same time, Liz Phair states: ""I love it when a song just flows out all at once and takes you by surprise. It's almost like recording a dream while you're awake! 'Girl's Room' happened in two seconds, as did 'Perfect World'. When a song comes to me all at once -- that gift from the muse -- I have a tendency to leave it alone and not try to polish it too much."

I write lyrics first and then add music, it's personal preference. I like to have the lyrics and the basic song in my head that way i can play a peice that reflects the mood. I play piano by the way, so...I guess you should try it one way and then the other and decide which one works best for you!

For me, Carole King is the final singer/songwriter she has written such incredibly some classic songs that people do no longer understand as hers because of the fact they have been coated by potential of alternative artists like Aretha Franklin and James Taylor. I additionally love that she would be in a position to play her very own gadgets, she's a superb pianist and that i belive she performs the guitar too.

I usually write words but I'm a much better writer than a musician. My son writes the music first...It doesn't matter, just do it!
