It's actually called a hysterosalpingogram.

This is a fertility test that involves the injection of radiographic dye into the uterine cavity, through the vagina and cervix, into the tubes. If the tubes are not occluded or damaged and blocked in some way, the dye will spill into the abdominal cavity (this is what you want to happen - it means your tubes are in good shape). If the tubes are blocked, your doc can discuss effective treatment options with you. The doc will also be looking for uterine polyps, fibroids and/or scar tissue, which can also cause problems with fertility. Depending on your results, more tests and/or surgery may be needed.

The test only takes about 5 minutes to perform and CAN be done in a doc's office, however, I DO NOT recommend that! It should be done in the hospital, preferably in the the radiology division.

You will be expected to lie on the table and pull your legs up so that the doc can insert the speculum and see the cervix. Then a catheter or tenaculum is placed on the cervix and a narrow metal cannula is inserted through the cervical opening. Dye is injected through the cannula into the uterine cavity and an x-ray picture is taken as the uterine cavity is filling. Additional contrast is then injected so that the tubes should begin fill and spill out. All the while, additional x-rays are going to be taken.

That's it. There will be cramping, sometimes even severe. Make sure your doc gives you appropriate pain meds.

Side note - though it's not therapeutic and is diagnostic only, sometimes as a result of the dye being forced through the tubes, women find increased pregnancy rates after this procedure. Good luck to you, hope it all works out.

A radiological examination of the uterus and Fallopian tubes. It involves introducing a contrast agent (a colourless fluid which is visible on X-rays) via a tube, which has been passed through the neck of the womb. The tube is held in place by a small balloon placed in the neck of the womb. A Radiologist with the help of a radiographer and an assistant will carry out the examination.

This examination can only be done between the 7th to the 14th day of your menstrual cycle.

It is a basic test for infertility in women. The test is usually done in the radiology department of a hospital in which radiographic contrast (dye) is injected into the uterine cavity through the vagina and cervix. The uterine cavity fills with dye and if the fallopian tubes are open the dye will then fill the tubes and spill out into the abdominal cavity. In this way it can be determined whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked and whether the blockage is located at the junction of the tube and the uterus (proximal) or whether it is at the end of the fallopian tube (distal). These two areas where the tube is most commonly blocked have different causes.

hysterosalpingrography (HSG) is an examination of the female reproduction system to detect any problems in the uterine tubes that may prevent conception or any polyps, or tumors found in the uterus. Basically what they do is inject contrast through the uterine cannula and it's very effective.

Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is the surgical removal of a fallopian tube and an ovary. If both sets of fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed, the procedure is called a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Your question leads me to believe you would be having a CT to view the uterus, tubes and ovaries.
