I live in Chicago and people do it ALL the time . . . Chicago is the home of the bungalow. You're going to have to "dormer" it out . . . talk to some local contractor's and they'll be able to help. It's actually not that big of a deal, they do it ALL the time here in the city, especially since real estate is so hot, people want larger houses.
I do have to add one caveat, check with your local city council's building code "person", too. Again, here in Chicago there has been a backlash from this sort of thing, people say it's ruining the character of the city. I'm more of a property rights activist, but, that's not really relevant to this question. Just make sure you check the building codes!!! I wish you the best of luck!!

You cannot "highten" (presumeing you mean make taller) a second story on a bungalow as bungalows are SINGLE STORY houses. :p sorry to be technical but if it is two story it isnt actually a bungalow anymore.
