How do you know you want to seek employment in a PR firm if you don't know what it entails? Is all about Public Relations! Getting people to notice your clients, know their products. Getting them in the newspaper, flyers, advertising on TVradio/magazines. Get the clients noticed at the least amount of money possible. You have to Know people, its all about getting out there and making a statement. Being in the public eye. When you think of Jack In The Box who do you think of? Obviously you think of "Jack"! The big round white head, little bitty black eyes and little red lips right? That was all done through the Public Relations department of Jack in the Box. They all sat around and tried what/who could they create that would stick in peoples minds. Same with the little dog for the Taco Bell commercials. It takes imagination, creativity, and a very WILD way of thinking. The more ideas you come up with for one product you want to sell the more money you can make. But the market in PR is a stiff one, you've got to have a really good imagination. Think of toothpaste. If you were to market a new toothpaste that a manufacturer says they want to sell....what ideas can you come up with to make it rememerable, stand out and want people to say I GOTTA TRY THAT! So they make a note that the VERY next time they're in a store they head for that toothpast over Colgate, Crest, and all the others. That is what marketing and public relations people do. They help get products remembered. So when you hear the name you automatically thing of THAT over anything else!

PR is used in all industries I used fashion examples because that's where I work.
A big part of PR is creating press kits, and press releases. Anyone going in to PR should have very good writing skills. Basically the PR company is hired to make sure the right people know about different things- a new movie, a business, a person etc.. The company puts together a packet of positive press (news paper clips / TV etc) pictures an and the release that they write themselves, then sends them to the necessary people. For example a new fashion designer hires a PR firm , the firm will send press kits to the editors of magazines this lets the editors know the designer is out there, the trick is to send such a good kit the editor will write about the designer in the magazine which is free publicity for the designer its better than buying an Ad in the magazine.
PR people also put together events to draw positive attention to their clients. Last year I got to go to fashion week, inside the tent I got a goodie bag full of stuff- the bag was from WE women's entertainment channel, in it was a Slim fast bar, some tea, mac lip gloss, and couple of other things. Those companies were looking to expose their products to women, 25 -45yrs old fashion week was a great place to do it the people your trying to reach are right there in one place, I feel bad for the interns who had to stuff all those bags! lol. PR people think of creative ideas to draw people to the clients product.

Public relations and Marketing usually go hand in hand. You may talk to clients regarding direct or online marketing campaigns, be a host for some event for a client, convey information about company products, etc. It is important to have strong communication skills, creativity, and perserverance. I hope this helps.

I'm guessing you brainstorm ways to promote things (companies, people, products, etc.) and then go about doing it!
