Good Question. If you make it over to Castro Valley hit up the College Avenue Burrito Shop. I have missed that place ever since I moved 10 years ago.

Go to Max's Opera House Cafe. Food is really great in a casual atmosphere. All the waiters and waitresses are aspiring opera / musical singers trying to make it in the industry. Every hour or so, one of the servers gets up and sings a number from a Broadway musical. If you go on your birthday, you'll hear the best rendition of Happy Birthday that you've ever heard. Desserts are out of this world and big enough to split. Get the strawberry shortcake or the cheesecake. Link below for a map and another review of Max's.

in san francisco it is hard to go wrong.... the restraunt either has amazing food or is new to business and is suffering....
I lived there a while back and loved Alice's on 29th and sanchez in noe valley .... it is a small neighborhood restraunt. there was Regent Thai on 29th and church.... another neighborhood restrunt... I lived right by there...
Saveur on 24th street is great for brunch and so is Zuni on market street... they have an awesome bloody mary.... great for dinner too.... try Hawthorne Lane, EOS, Fifth Floor, Aqua, Gary Danko if you do not mind spending money....
Back to Zuni... I think that is great all around... not terribly expensive and they got an awesome selection of oysters, a wood fired oven for pizzas and roasted chicken.....great winelist, good cocktails...... I think zuni wins it for me.....
Voted best chinese food if you do not mind a "hole in the wall" atmosphere is the House of Nan King downtown....
