We are here for the same reason as every other species of organism on this planet. If we weren't here, the world would be a cleaner planet.

1st question: Earth is the only place which has sustenance for us to survive.
2nd question: Purpose is to test us on our character and discipline so that we can be placed in the correct world in the afterlife (if you are in a religion) or to test on our ability to survive in a world where people have bad character and discipline (if you are a free thinker or your religion do not believe in afterlife). I'm trying my best to be diplomatic and neutral.
But i guess the purpose of life will be different to different people. Some believe to gather as much wealth by any means necessary for their predecesors. Some believe in devoting themselves to a religion. Some believe that ending other people's life is their purpose in life.
3rd question: Everything happens for a reason. If we are not here, there will be no catastrophe. Imagine a parallel universe where apes rule and live in. For all you know, humans are the ones causing the catastrophe.

Those are really good questions I don't know the answer to. But I don't think there would be a catastrophe if we weren't here. There could have been one tons of years ago though.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to see it, does it matter?
So to answer the second part of your question, no. There would not be a catastrophe if humans no longer inhabited the earth.
It was here long before us.
Why are we here?
It depends on what theology you rely on to answer that question. The generally accepted answer is either by the grace of God or by evolution.
The choice of conclusion is an individual one.

It would not matter if we were not here. Think about other extinct animals.
We are a plague or parasite that lives and feeds of the earth and we destroy all the forests and eat all the animals and ruin all the water and poison the air.
We are just like any other animal except we are the strongest and best at adapting so we destry and ruin everything as we are stupid - most of us are, well most men that control everything anyway.

I think a more acurate term for humans would be a virus. The planets population is growing at an exponential rate. We destroy the environment with pollution. We are the only creature on the planet that doesn't establish a balance with nature.

Actually, I think it would be the opposite of a catastrophe if we weren't here. Look at the age of dinosaurs. The Earth was stable without the threat of unexpected global warming caused by us. It would face the threat of dinosaur poop though...yikes...

Our purpose is to live the richest, fullest, most bless filled life possible. To take full advantage of the gifts here on Earth, to stop and smell the roses on occasion and to make a point to support your fellow human being as often as possible. Our purpose here is to live, laugh. love as though your life depends on it.

I believe we are the Universe incarnate. We are the Universe manifesting itself into physical form. We are here, because the natural laws of the universe demand that we be here, along with every other living or non-living entity. In fact, if we were not here, there would be no universe at all. If there is not an observer, then there is nothing to be observed. Hence, no universe. We are the universe, experiencing itself. Kinda deep, huh?
