Besides stress, pregnancy, hormonal imbalance and dietary insufficiency...it is also possible to begin skipping periods if you are too heavy. The excess weight changes the amount of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone balance and affects your cycle. If you are concerned you should see the doctor. Or, it may be something more serious and you should definitely see the doctor.

If you are taking the pill, you may not get your period if you miss too many pills.
Stress, anorexia, diet, and sometimes just the mysteries of the universe... may be other reasons.

Fibroid tumors (not cancerous) can also cause this. So I have been told by my doctor, they feed of the hormones so the uterus doesn't get enough of the hormones to induce the period.

When you have a period you shed the lining of your uterus each month.
When you are pregnant, the fetus gets some of its nutrients, etc...from this...so therefore you dont have a period...cause it needs to stay intact!

A hormone imbalance. To find out what's out of whack though, you would have to get blood tests at your gynocologist.
Severe stress or excessive exercising can do it too.
