And what's with the doctors who don't advise them that the first milk the baby recieves is critical since it is a booster for their immunity system, etc?

Are American woman less endowed than other countries? Or have we gone off the deep end where everything and anything seems to be equated with sex?

Fortune 500 companies PUSH PUSH PUSH free formula at birth so the mother dries up, then she's forced to buy the expensive formula. It's all about capitali$m. It's sad, it truly is.

First of all, personally, i think it's sad that you make such a generalization about American women. There are many reasons why women (no matter where they're from) wouldn't breastfeed.
Being "less endowed" usually is the last reason. Some women can't breastfeed even though they want to. There are medical reasons, "too busy" and its easier for some to bottle feed, and then there is also they just don't want to deal with it. Some women are ill-informed and don't know breastfeeding is best for the child. But most doctors and hospitals encourage breastfeeding.

Breast feeding should be encouraged because its healthier and has been proven by scientific studies as so, thats the same as eating organic foods instead of chemically processed foods. Its just healthier!

But as to why Americans are more opposed to it?
America is all about the money- it costs more to buy formulas than it does to breast feed.

And secondly, Americans are so afraid of sexual things that even now breastfeeding outside of the home is beginning to get looked at as wrong. Breastfeeding whether at home or outside is not wrong, so long as your breasts are not bare for everyone to see.

And in response to a previous comment that women in other countries dont work as much and stay home barefoot in the kitchen etc you must not have traveled very much because America is not the only country with working mothers, hence the reason several countries even third world Jamaica have had female prime ministers (presidents) and not being anti american, just making a point- American has not.

Don't know where you got your information from but Doctors do suggest breast feeding as a primary food source for the baby BUT many woman have very busy work schedules and cant afford the luxury of breast feeding their babies. Not all American woman are UN employed like most other countries where as the dominant male does the caveman routine by being a provider and mommy stays at home barefoot and pregnant.

This one is a no-brainer!

Americans are so used to things being non natural that not only they do not know the benefits of the natural but they are truely afraid of it.

The culture is such that everyone is ok with bio engeneered tomatos, picked green in Florida, put in a closed truck pumped with metane gas so by the time the truck arrives to New York the tomatos are red.

the bottom line is that breast milk is not plastick and as such it is foriegn to american mothers.

To bad

This is a great question. It turns out that breast feeding actually reduces your chances of breast cancer, AND it's a method of contraception too, as you cannot menstuate during the breast feeding period. So, although American women choose not to breast feed for some reason, it would actually serve in their best interests...and their babies...to do so. They are still trying to figure out the mechanism relating breast-feeding and reducing the likelihood of getting breast cancer...hormonal (estrogen, progesterone etc).

I think its because most women are ashamed of their body , then theres the time factor that most arent willing to invest (even into their newborn baby) its easier if somebody else can feed the baby.. I breastfed all 3 of mine and reccommend it to any new mom .. its such a great bonding experience as well as being the most healthy thing for baby :) ~Melissa

it beats the heck outta me. There was no other way for me, and that was in the fifties when I guess it wasn't so popular. I never cared about what was popular. And I didn't have bigguns. They did the job, for five young'uns, including twins. Picture this: One child on the left side, one on the right side, and me holding a book, feeding the twins in the middle, reading to the older ones. I must admit, I was older then than I am now, when the kids were all under five!
I guess Knowing it is what we are designed to do is what worked for me.

That's a pretty huge generalization. Amongst women I know, it's considered general knowledge that the colostrum is vital for the baby's immune system and that breastfeeding is ideal. Most of the new (American) mothers I know have nursed.

some women cant stand the feeling when the breast have to much milk in them or when thier to full. Trust me, my sister couldnt stand the feeling of engorgement but i did. I didnt see and trouble with it. I just kept buying nursing pads. If some women have trouble, they shouldnt breast feed.
