Dragonjousters series(joust, alta, sanctuary) by Mercedes Lackey. The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. He discovers that, because Ari himself had hatched Kashet, the dragon is different from others that have been captured live in the wild and must be drugged to be made tractable. Vetch finds he really likes and understands dragons, and soon he becomes the best dragon boy of all. He still harbors anger, however, toward the Tian invasion. Could he, perhaps, hatch a dragon, and then escape to help his people?
Dragonswan by Sherrilyn Kenyon.Dr. Channon MacRae wanted to unravel the mystery of the Dragon Tapestry. What she never expected to uncover was an entire society that is older than time. A secret society that has existed as part of the world and yet apart from it.
Sebastian Kattalakis has come forward in time to reclaim the tapestry he sold years before. The last thing he expects is to find a woman whose intellect and charm captures his animal attention. But he is a man on the run, outcast and
ostracized, he can offer her nothing except a heart that was broken by circumstances four hundred years ago.

For a light read check out Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Although all four books refer to dragons in the title, the first book (Dealing With Dragons) has the most dragon characters.

Some good authors who have done dragon-related series:
Patricia C. Wrede - "Dealing with Dragons" series (4 books, I think) - fun fantasy books
Jane Yolen - several dragon-related books of varying styles, they tend to be a bit more serious than Patricia C. Wrede's books but they're really good fiction
Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern series - they're good, but there's about twenty of them and she ran out of new ideas by book 10 or so. They also have more sex than I wanted to read about . . .
Orson Scott Card - "Wyrms" is a great one, although again, more sex than you might like

Robert Jordan's entire main series.
That should keep you reading for months....
Dragons of Pern by Ann McAfree is another excellent set thats actually more dragon based than Jordans' stuff. Its also not quite as dense.

i just read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which isn't about dragons so much but it's about vlad the impaler but it treats him as a truly immortal vampire. this guy drew his power from a dragon so maybe you'd be into this book too.
you can read excerpts from this book at amazon.com, which is where i browse for books because it shows top selling lists as well as lists created by readers just like you
