New power plugs are usually rather difficult to disconnect. Also, your power connectors may use a fancy grip that you need to loosen by squeezing the sides of the connector. The main motherboard connectors usually have a little hook on them that you have to disengage as you pull the connectors out of their sockets.
If there is no fancy hooking mechanism on a plug or you have disengaged the mechanism but the plug still won't come out of the socket, try gently rocking the plug from side to side as you pull it. Don't rock the plug too far to the sides or you might break the socket it's connected to.

First of all, what type of motherboard do you have? Is it AT Standard, or is it ATX?
If it is ATX: There is a clip in the center of the main power buss cord. Push it and pull the cord out.
If it is AT: Then good luck. They are extremly out dated and you might want to consider an upgrade. If you cannot afford an upgrade, the AT style motherboard power connections unplug by rocking them forward and pulling them out. Make sure you do not confuse these connections when reapplying your new power supply. If you plug in an AT power supply backwards, it will fry your motherboard.
Try a google search for A + hardware.

The motherboard connectors have little "hooks" on one side. Squeeze your thumb on one end to lift that hook and pull cord out. gently.
Now the optical/hard Drive power connector are a real pain in the ___. Yes they can be difficult to remove. Sometimes it helps to remove the drive from the housing, hold it in one hand and wiggle the power connector off with the other.

There is usually a small "lock" on the plastic connector. You need very very small fingers or a small pair of needle-nosed pliers to get in the space. When the lock is released, the connector comes right off with almost no effort.

Yeah, the other answers are right. Just grab the white plastic part (not the wires) and wiggle it a bit as you pull out. You won't break anything with steady pressure. ( we hope -_o)
