This question is in response to another question I asked:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/qid=20060628095322AAaAtQP&r=w

I have a handheld and the display is not correct.

Based on the other answer it appears that the screen was subjected to magnetic fields. To solve this you have to degauss the display. Does anybody know how to do this?

I have a Palm IIIxe handheld.

As far as I know, degauss is only for CRT displays. Since your handheld most likely is using LCD, I doubt degaussing the display is the solution.

Maybe the LCD is broken.

An LCD display is not affected by magnetic fields in the same way a CRT display would be. Degaussing would likely have no effect on the screen and would not solve the problem.

Any color distortion that an LCD screen shows would be due to some sort of heat damage or some kind of physical damage (i.e. pressure or bending.) If there is some other sort of image distortion then the screen maybe damaged in some other way. It is very likely that any repair costs associated would be much greater than the value of the unit and would be much cheaper to buy a whole new unit.

Since I have no idea how the "display is not correct," I really can't tell what is wrong with it.

well first off you should not have to degauss in that most displays have a built in auto degauss but if the case is that the feature is not working one can degauss using a magnet starting a few feet from the display move the magnet in large circles around the display decreasing the circle size and distance as you go tile you come to the center of the display then continue as you increase size of the circles and ditance till once again a few feet away!
However be warned that if you then move the display in relationship tp the earths magnetic field you will have to do it again

If it's too dark or too light, look for the contrast "thing" in the grafitti area. On my Clie SL10, it's in the lower right corner. It looks like a circle with black on one side and white on the other. (Or a pie dish with a half of a black pie in it)
