it uses simple tiangulation principle. By knowing where the towers are and how long it takes the signal to travel from from the tower to the handset and back, thus gives the distance (electrons moving through space take a given time to move a given distance) by doing this with one tower a circle can be made around the tower at that distance radi, if you do this again with tow others, you now have a point off comminality. This is the point where you are.. and a location now is concluded.

Cell Phone Triangulation can nail you to the very square FOOT if you don't move and stay on the line for a while!
If you do move, and / or stay only a short time on line, they can instantly get you to within a block, then after a few well - timed seconds, they'll be able to get you to a few 100 feet, then after a few minutes, pinpoint you to a dime!
