I have a Toshiba laptop and, just recently, it's been shutting off sporadically. When I'm playing a computer game or ripping a movie to my PSP it will completely turn off for no reason. But when I'm just doing regular things like surfing the web or watching DVDs, it works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Any answers would be appreciated, thank you.

I have the same problem with mine. The cause is overheating. Many laptops have a TDP (thermal design point) inadequate for keeping the computer from overheating when running at 100% CPU for long periods of time. Many laptops are designed more for tasks such as word-processing and power point presentations that are not so demanding on the CPU. Higher-end work-horse laptops, while big and heavy, do not suffer from this same problem (though they will get *hot*). You can try buying a cooling pad for your laptop -- they're around $20-$30. Can't guarantee it will help, but many people swear by them.

It's possible that it could be an overheating issue. when you play games and rip movies, your putting alot of stress on your cpu,RAM and your video and the laptop probalaly came with integrated graphics, unless you had a card installed. The onboard video is probably not that great depending on how old your laptop is and which video chip it came with.Have a technician check for overheating

Many laptops have a circuit that monitors cpu tempuratur, and shuts down if it goes too high. The fact that your problem only happens when doing cpu intensive things points to this. Either that circuit is set too low, or you cpu is getting too hot. Take it to the shop and get it fixed.

Sounds like it's overheating when you're pushing the limits. I'm not sure how to solve that on a laptop.

Clean the CPU heat sink and fan, but it's very dangerous job.

Seriously, I wish everyone would see that Windows PCs are terrible. If you had a Mac, this would not happen.
