I am doing a debate on wether or not cell phones should be allowed to be on and used during class. And wether or not they are a distraction from the learning enviroment.

i believe it is disrespectful to leave your phone on during class time. the speaker should get everybody's undivided attention. they would be constantly interrupted in class by phones ringing if this was allowed. I did have one professor allowing cell phones if the student had family emergencies and requested it right before class began.

Definitely, the use of cell phone is okay only if they are switched off before entering the college and switched back on after school hours. Communication in this our world is so essential, especially in cases of unforseen circumstances, where communication is very necessary.
But the disadvantages of a college student bringing cell phone to school far outweighs the advantages.Firstly, students should be made to know that there is time for everything.Out of school matters should be attended to b4 or after school and not during the learning process. This at least teaches the student to be organised.
Secondly,a ringing phone during a class session interrupts and distracts both the teacher and the students.
Matters discussed on phone can also affect study of that student for the day, these include bad news or disturbing messages ,boyfriend/girlfriend matters, money making matters, etc
Also, the level of respect between the teacher and student declines when a student has to walk out on a teacher to recieve a call.
All in all,the school becomes a business centre where everyone is recieving calls and this is destructive to the school environment.

First of all, I think having a cell phone on campus is fine. However, when in class cell phones should be turned off for three reasons. (1) You are there to learn, not chat. (2) Other people paid good money to be in that class and using the phone is distracting to others. (3) People have been known to cheat using text messaging. This is a problem because many professors grade on a bell shaped curve. If someone is cheating they can blow the curve for those who actually studied.

Definitely should not be used during class, or even on. Even when the cell phone is on vibrate it is still plainly obvious that the phone is ringing. It is a definite distraction, not only to the students but the teacher as well. If it is absolutely necessary for the phone to be on (family emergency, etc.) the student should be courteous to inform the teacher that they may need to take or make a call during class.
I also have a serious pet peeve with people talking on their phones during the movies. It drives me crazy!! And then, if I politely ask them to be quiet, I get called names. Why do so many people have no manners anymore?

Using a cell phone in college is allowed except during classes. There are some teachers who, if a cell phone goes off during their class, they will insist on answering the call. This happened during spanish class once and the caller was completely confused. A good laugh, but cell phones shouldn't be used during class.

NO! I think that cell phones shouldent be allowed during class at all. Cell phones distract a lot of things including other people who are usuly trying to pay attention. Besides if your going to college your going to learn, and in order to learn you need to pay attention in class, not mess with your cell phone~~ most classes are under 2 hrs any way so a message can wait.

I teach at a university and one of the very few rules I have is that all cell phones will be turned off and kept off during class. Those stupid ringtones are nothing if not obnoxious and disturb others who are in the class attempting to learn something. If you're in college, you're going to class to learn - not to sit there yakking on the phone. I have confiscated phones from people who thought I was kidding about turning them off and one day had a pile of 27 sitting on a table in the front of the room (they got them back after class). You need to ask yourself - am I here to learn something that will help me in the future or am I here to talk on my cell phone? I look forward to the day when it becomes school policy that all phones will be checked in at the door when a student enters the classroom. And what can be so important that it can't wait until you're out of class?

Cell phones are a distraction especially in class. More importantly, your are sending a message to the instructor that the call is more important that whatever this lecture/class is about. This is extremely rude and seeing as someones hard earned money is paying for this class, it seems like a poor way to get your moneys worth. Then there is the issue of other students right to hear the lecture that they paid for. IT SEEMS RIDICULOUS TO PAY FOR CLASSES, MOVIES, FOOD ETC JUST TO TALK ON THE PHONE.

I am a college instructor and I ABSOLUTELY believe that cell phones are a distraction and should NOT be allowed in the classroom. I tell my students to leave it at home or put it on vibrate. I was shocked the first time a student ANSWERED a phone in class.

Being on the cell phone while the professor is trying to teach is such a no-no it is disrespectful and if it is an emergency the person should excuse themselves.

Cell phone while:

Checking out at Grocery store
In a meeting
In class
Driving
Talking to someone standing with you and not in the same comvo

Are all no-no's.
