I came across this article while trolling for news on cnn.com.

It says that the Earth is the hottest it's been in 2000 years. While doubtless many people would claim this to be undeniable proof of Global Warming, I want to know why the earth was so hot 2000 years ago. It's not as if Jesus and his disciples were driving from town to town spreading the Word of God in their Chevy Suburbans. Isn't this really just proof of cyclical shifts in the Earth's climate?

Kurt C -- I get my news from many different sources, both left and right wing, and I split the difference between the two sets of stats. I just thought this particular article was interesting enough in and of itself to debate.

Yes. The Earth goes in "cycles" per say, about every 400 years, not 2,000. It may have been hotter 2,000 years ago than 400 years ago, which might mean that today is the second hottest quint-centennial! A catastrophic Ice Age happens every 10,000 - 15,000 years, which means we are going to experience one in about 5,000 years. Global Warming will really take it's full effect on Earth in about 50 - 100 years, which means stronger hurricanes, stronger storms, and melting ice caps in the polar regions. It could be coincidence that 2,000 years ago, after Jesus' death, it was a punishment that God bestowed on Earth...To make it reach barely survivable temperatures because of our sins. We may never know what causes Global Warming, but we do know that it's very imminent and even occurring as we speak (type).

The Earth goes through 20 years of cooling, then 20 years of warming. It is every 40 years that there is a warming, same as a cooling.
It was in the 80's when the new reproters were saying that there will be "another iceage" which did not happen, right?
It's all hype.
There are cycles and patterns to the way the Universe works and this is part of that.

That's what I tend to believe. The 1970's was a colder than usual time in recent history so it's not surprising that it has gotten warmer over the past couple decades. However, I don't know how anyone knows how warm or cold it was 2,000 years ago. Our records of the weather only go back a little over 100 years. I don't rule out the possibility of global warming but they still haven't proved it yet or disproved that our planet may just go through cycles in temperature. I think it's corrupt to push these theory's on us as if it is for certain. It seems that it is on someones agenda to put fear in us in all kinds of ways these days.

no, the statement that it's the hottest in 2000 years is false. The media took a congressional report on climate studies in the last 400 years, which basically stated that global warming could not be definitely proven, and came up with 2000 years somehow. keep searching, you'll see how they manipulated the data.

*chuckles You're correct about the cyclical shifts in the Earth's climate. The present debate over global warming is that humans have been speeding up that process since the Industrial Revolution.

You nailed it! The earth has gone through heat and cold waves for hundreds of thousands of years. In addition, the temperature increase can be accounted for merely by realizing that urban environments, with more buildings and windows, have become warmer, but with negligible impact on the world's overall temperature.

It is called the el nino. It happens every 1000 - 2000 years or so, with extreme temeratures, heavy rain and cold...a mess in general...it is not something new, but global warming is not natural, it is the effect of carbon dioxide emissions we produce.
