Pine is a soft wood and nails easily, but if nailing very near the edge, you may want to pre-drill a small hole for the nail first. Pine is good for bookshelves, just not as durable as a hardwood, (oak, ash, etc)

Pine is one of the softer woods. Nails should go fairly easily into the wood. Like all woods, it is recommended to predrill holes before nailing. Otherwise, pine bookshelfs are beautiful and usually smell really nice.

pine is very easy to work with, easy to cut and nail. but do be careful not to overload the shelf, unlike most hard woods pine cannot support as much weight without sagging over time. you might check out your local home improvement center for books and magazines for ideas and plans

The wood resists splitting when nailed, which allows for the use of larger nails and increases nail retention.

Happy carpentry!
