The development of contemporary dance was parallel but separate to the development of New dance in Britain. Distinctions can be made between European, Canadian and American Contemporary dance.

In the UK and most of Europe, contemporary is the ballet related concert dance that abandons the rules and has a wider vocabulary of movement but is still based on ballet skills. Modern, in the UK, is a ragbag of everything else including jive, tap and show dance. Contemporary would be considered an "art form", whereas modern is social, entertainment and commercial. The terms seem to be used differently in the US.
