Simple: Let's say the Yankees are 43-37, since they won today, but the Red Sox are playing tonight. Both teams started out 42-37, but since the Yankees won before the Red Sox played they now have a very slightly better record. If the Red Sox lose that night, the Yankees will be one game ahead. If the Red Sox win, the two teams will be tied. Keep in mind that since each team plays the same number of games in a season, there are no half-game leads once the season is over.

The difference between two teams' wins is divided in half, and the same is done for the difference between the two teams' losses. Then you add the two and that is how many games behind a certain team is. This is done because wins and losses are each only half of the difference between the two teams' record.
For example, let's say San Francisco's record is 50-35 and Los Angeles' record is 50-34. The difference between the teams' wins is zero(50 minus 50 is 0, then 0 divided by 2 is 0). The difference between the two teams' losses is .5(35 minus 34 is 1, then 1 divided by 0 is .5).
So you add 0(the difference in wins between the two teams) and .5(the difference in lossesbetween the two teams) and the total is .5).
Hope that helped.

One team has played more games than the other.
In the most basic case, when one team is 0-0 and one team is 1-0, then the team is .5 games ahead. Once the first team loses and is 0-1, then it's a full game ahead as usual.

Its like if two teams are tied then one of the teams has an off day or something and then the other team wins they will move up half a game.

It has to do with teams not having played exactly the same number of games.
If I win and you lose, then I'm a game up. But if I win and you don't play today, then I'm a half game up.

Some teams have a game in hand, or three, etc.
Ex: Dodgers (3W, 2L)
Giants (3W, 3L)
In this hypothetical scenario, the Dodgers would be 1/2 game ahead of the Giants.
