They were in search of a better life. Unfortunately, because of some very existing racial prejudice, they could not find that better lifestyle they were looking for.
By the way, Mexico is a poor country and the US is the richest country in the world.

The answer is simple: Money.
Why?
'Cause we've got it & Mexico doesn't, many have elected to make a break for the border.
[seriously, if you knew you were gonna have to bust your *** just to feed your family & keep them alive, wouldn't you want to go to the place that afforded you the best opportunity to do so?]
$5.15/hour starts looking food fast in a country where people routinely have to survive on less than $15/month!
