It's uncomfortable, but nothing compared to contractions. The hardest part is that you have to sit perfectly still even during the contraction as he puts the needle in. Seriously it feels like a needle, and it's really a relief compared to the contractions.

I've had two children who are now 2 1/2 years and almost 9 months. I had an epidural for both of them and I highly recommend it. I used to be deathly afraid of needles but with all the blood tests with pregnancy, I've gotten better about that. My epidurals both felt like a pinch and I wouldn't even describe it as pain compared to the horrible contractions. I actually slept for an hour while in labor after my epidural for my first child. Childbirth was not as bad as I thought it would be. The best thing for you is to try to stay relaxed and your labor will go faster. The guy who said the epidural feels like a dagger going in has no idea what he's talking about. Good luck!

The epidural will require you to be very still and you are going to feel an initial prick in your spine and then you will feel it going in your spine, tkaes less than 2 minutes for this. It is uncomfortable but definitely not painful. The relief you will have afterward will be worth it.
You may have some soreness for the first couple of months until you heal but I have had 5 children and 4 epidurals. All of which were not painful. Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with

I didn't read all of the question but SERIOUSLY GET ONE! I wanted to go natural SOOOOOOO bad and I tried and I tried for 5-6 hrs of HARD contractions, my deciding factor to get an epidural was because I couldn't breath during my contractions (which is obviously what we use to help us get through contractions)... so I said screw it "Get me an Epidural"..... the only reason why I didn't want to get an epidural was because I am so terrified of needles (which they stuck me 3 times for my IV) anyways... so I thought it was going to hurt... BUT IT DIDN'T

The only part that hurt (and I shouldn't even say hurt it kinda stung like a bee) was the numbing medication they put around the epidural space.... then they take a needle and put it into the epidural space and slide a catheter in which i could feel sensations down my leg, but it never hurt!
I heard that if I had an epidural my back was going to be screwed for ever,,, but its not!
so when your in there having horrible contractions just evaluate the situation, and hold out as long as you can!
Also, they say it will delay your pushing because you can't feel... I pushed 5 times and my beautiful baby boy was born.
So happy laboring, and happy pushing!!! Don't be afraid to get an epidural, it saves you a lot of energy and your spouses a lot of energy for trying to help you through those contractions!!! I actually got to rest un t il my son came it was great!

I didn't have an epidural. I had an intrathecal. It is injected into the spine like an epidural, but it doesn't numb you. It is just a strong pain killer. The shot hurt a little, but it was nothing compared to the labor pains. I was begging for that shot. I didn't care if it hurt or not. So, don't worry about it! It'll be fine!

I had no problems with my epidural at all. Other people say it hurts a lot, but worth it because the major part of the labor pain is taken away. The only side effect I had was a wave of nausea, once.

I recommend it...it took the edge off of the labor pain, but I could still feel when to push.

if you can AVOID the epidural PLEASE DO. you never know if you will be one of the unfortunate (like myself) that gets BAD side effects. i had a migrain within an hour of delivery. it was my first ever migrain and i had it off and on out of the blue for a few WEEKS. the doctor said it was an advirse side effect. i never again used ANY pain meds during delivery ... and do you know what? yeah, it hurt but ONLY until i was done delivering the child. once the child was born i felt GREAT. the most painful part of labor does NOT really last for very long... and i was able to enjoy my new babies instantly and constantly without pain meds. my first child i only held for a few minutes before i felt my head was going to explode (a side effect)... then i only held him off and on over the next FEW DAYS in between the horrid headaches...

No, it doesn't hurt, it is a little uncomfortable, because of the contractions, but it itself doesn't hurt! believe me I have 4 children and had a epidural with 3 of them! It is the only way to go, I promise, if u don't have it u will regret it! Good Luck with your baby, hope all goes well!

I ended up getting one with my first pregnancy. I'm going to say it was the worst experience. I was already 4cm before I went into labor to begin with..which it what you re supposed to be before you can get the epidural. So I requested one and was about 8 cm before the Dr. came into give it to me. Well, the guy had the worst time getting it in. He must have tried for about 45-50 minutes. I had blood running down my back and well, sitting that way for that long while in labor was horrible. I kept getting shots to numb my back..it was just horrible for me. Not to scare the poop out of you...I just want to let you know my personal experiance...just to forwarn you. Definatly wouldn't do that again and Im pregnant with my second.

with my first, I felt nothing when I got the epidural, probably because I was in such horrific labor pain that nothing would have phased me. my second, contractions were no where near as bad (not even in the same ball park) but still didn't hurt hardly at all. poor doc, I am ticklish so it was very hard for me to sit still any time he even touched my back but he did good, it worked and all was well.
