I want to download some kind of "beginners guide" to Opera on my Ipod. Iwant the well known stuff, Nessun Dorma, Carmen etc. Can anyone recommend a good album for me?

Renee Flemming is amazing, if you can get anything from her.
Maria Callais is a must have.

My itunes is being nasty, but operas I recommend:
Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutti, Dido and Aenas, etc. all the classics.

Cozi fan Tutti (spelling probably wrong) but get a big IPOD.

Trouble with Opera is that you need to see it, its very visual. The humour in this is very funny and clever. You might need to brush up on your languages Italian is a very good idea if you really want to get into it.

Actually if you just go to Wal-Mart they have $5 CDs called Opera's Greatest Hits or something like that, on their Website they might have where you can individually download songs, but they are so cheap I'd say go for it and just buy them.

well the best is get some sample of Overtures ,,, chorus not only Carmen ,,, Aida , Tosca , Nabucco,, i think go 4 samples cause whole opera get be boring 4 beginners ,,, i love opera ,,, 1st time went as i was 7 years old ,,,, thanks 2 my parents 4 that ,,, try some easy things of Strauss ,,, like fledermaus ,,, omg there r lots things i could recommend

well, as far as individual opera highlight albums go, Marriage of Figaro by Mozart is fabulous.

compilations...hmmm...opera at the movies has some of the well known and loved arias/

erm...not really a opera type, but i guess you could erm...try renting 'phantom of the opera'. only opera thing i know, lol.
